Welcome to The Helpful Art Teacher, an interdisciplinary website linking visual arts to math, social studies, science and language arts.

Learning how to draw means learning to see. A good art lesson teaches us not only to create but to look at, think about and understand our world through art.

Photoshop Tutorial: Drawing with Adobe Photoshop Tips and Shortcuts

Create your own unique fun cartoon cityscape,
even if you've never used Photoshop before.
Does technology intimidate you? Do you find yourself tuning out during typical tutorials? If you can draw on paper, you can draw using Photoshop. No technology experience necessary!
Does using Adobe Photoshop intimidate you? With so many tools and drop down menus, where do you even start? Do those Adobe books make your eyes glaze over? Did you think you were the only one? Tutorials need to be more engaging! You'll want to pause the tutorial frequently as you play with Photoshop. Replay pause and rewind. That's totally okay! Even if you think you know Photoshop, I'll give you new shortcuts. 11 minutes from now you'll be creating like a digital native. Please leave questions in the comments and I'll try to respond right away.

I needed to make a background for an animation I was creating. This was my initial design.

When I tried it with the animation, I found my original background to be too brightly colored, busy and distracting for my animation. So I quickly hid a few of the front layers and added the sidewalk.

Here is how the finished picture looked complete with the animation characters on the sidewalk. Best of all, I didn't need to eraser or re-draw anything. I just hid a few layers.

The video tutorial above covers a lot of material in a very short time. You might not remember everything. So here are some screenshots showing you how to access and use all the most important tools you will need to create your city, in the order they appear in the video:

Happy creating! Don't forget to share your cityscape creations with me. Have a question? Leave me a comment. I will try to answer right away!

  1. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find
this topic to be actually something that I think I would never understand.
It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me.
I'm looking forward for your next post, I'll try to get the hang of
    it!
